CU Volunteer of the Month - Yehemy Zavala

Yehemy Soledad Zavala Orozco was born in the State of Mexico. From age 5 and until age 22 she lived in Mexico City where she attended UNAM  (The National Autonomous University of Mexico), one of the most prestigious Universities in Mexico and Latin America.   She obtained a Bachelors Degree in Visual Arts and hopes to one day become a school teacher. She currently attends Salt Lake Community College, where she is learning English. Yehemy is a talented, energetic and compassionate person. Her favorite hobbies are dancing, walking  and listening to other people, and she likes photography, woodcut, and art history.

Yehemy is a very active volunteer she dedicates her free time to help her community through the different programs at CU.  For the past five months, Yehemy has been very active within the Latina and Multicultural Breast Cancer Program, Prenatal Program and Ventanilla de Salud. She was a key volunteer at the Prenatal Conference, Celebrando con la Comunidad event, Health Fairs, and office duties. Thank you Yemehy for all the hard work that you do!

2010 CU Volunteer of the Year: Antonio Garza

Antonio Garza Zertuche has volunteered at Communities United for over three years. He has committed over 450 hours of community service! He is originally from Monclova Mexico and is currently attending Salt Lake Community College working on his general studies. Antonio will soon transfer to the University of Utah to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Film Studies. Antonio has volunteered in most CU programs and activities since he started working with us. He also served as an Americorps Intern during the Spring of 2010.

Antonio has been instrumental to CU's marketing efforts related to social media. He has helped us organize events, design and distribute flyers, translate documents, coordinate volunteers, among other office and program duties. Antonio is also a Certified Democracy Schools Trainer.
