 Food Access Organizer

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Food Access Organizer Position. Comunidades Unidas (CU) is a non-profit organization based in West Valley City. CU is an organization dedicated to empowering the Latinx community in Utah to recognize and achieve their own potential and become a positive force for change in the larger community.

The Food Access Organizer will connect gaps with stakeholders and provide permanent solutions to food insecurity for Latinx communities. Also, the candidate will provide their expertise working with food insecurity to the CU team and connect issues around food access to immigrant rights and social justice. 

 

The ideal candidate will:

 

  • Have a strong sense of social justice as a process, not an outcome

  • Rooted in the understanding that our community doesn't need a voice, we have one. What we need is to get comfortable using it and for those around us to listen

  • Have prior knowledge and/or experience working and understanding the needs and disparities of the LGBTQ+ community

  • Be a Promotora or a Community Health Worker or interest in becoming one and taking the CU Promotora training

  • Understand what a Promotora is or willingness to learn

  • Be aligned with the mission and vision of the organization

  • At least two years of experience in community outreach or similar field

  • Demonstrated commitment to community wellness, health and social justice

  • Computer proficient

  • Excellent communication skills both, oral and written, English and Spanish

  • Understanding and familiarity with the United States and Latinx/Hispanic cultures  and understand the barriers to access, needs, disparities and intersectionalities within the community

  • Social skills

  • Schedule flexibility on weekends and after office hours

  • Transportation availability is indispensable for this position 

  • Possess outstanding organizational skills and have experience maintaining records and files up to date

  • Be self-motivated, flexible and driven

  • Be resourceful, have the ability to to utilize independent judgment and the ability to balance multiple priorities effectively

  • Be able to work and communicate efficiently with other team members

  • Be bilingual, Spanish and English



Main Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

  • Implement Food Access Programs objectives 

  • Coordinate and organize with promotoras, youth and volunteers for food access programs and events 

  • Responsible for preparing and submitting reports 

  • Create a system to track program objectives

  • Create and maintain tracking data 

  • Responsible for maintaining open communication with stakeholders 

  • Assist with food distribution events and coordination

  • Assist with the creation of a comprehensive referral system on food security 

  • Assist with the enrollment of community members to food access programs

  • Create educational material related to the food access programs

  • Work with community members and stakeholders to advocate for policies at the local and state level that systemically eradicate the challenges that our community experiences when trying to access healthy, low cost foods

  • Coordinate and organize with community through the principles of Community Organizing, Transformational Organizing, Popular Education, and World-Traveling (Maria Lugones)

  • Enforce community organizing principles within projects and CU members 

  • Rooted in the understanding that our community doesn't need a voice, we have one. What we need is to get comfortable using it and for those around us to listen


Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time  (40 hrs/wk) with subsidized medical and dental benefits, paid time off, paid holidays, and retirement plan (simple IRA). CU’s work hours are Monday - Thursday 8 am - 6 pm.
