 Now Hiring: Senior Organizer 

 

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Senior Organizer. Comunidades Unidas (CU) is a non-profit organization based in West Valley City. CU is an organization dedicated to empowering the Latinx community in Utah to recognize and achieve their own potential and become a positive force for change in the larger community. 

 

For years CU has been mobilizing and organizing members of Utah’s immigrant communities to exercise their electoral power, engage with elected officials and learn key policy-making processes to push for equitable policies that will advance the priorities of immigrants in the U.S. After years of this organizing and mobilizing efforts our community, and CU, are committed to prioritizing the protection of immigrant’s rights and utilizing the current electoral advancements we have made to push for immigration reform, equitable distribution of COVID19 resources, tax equity, and voter engagement this 2021 at the state and national level. As a result, the Senior Organizer will mobilize and empower members of the Latinx community in Utah to become a force for change through advocacy and engagement. The organizer will engage an innovative team of youth, Promotorxs, and community members to fight for the changes they want to see in their communities. The organizer will be guided by a strong sense of social justice and will be able to understand the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic faces on immigrant communities. Hence, they will find creative ways to ensure that their community can channel their emotions into action with a direct focus on immigrant rights.

 

The ideal candidate will:

 

  • Have a strong sense of social justice as a process, not an outcome

  • Have prior knowledge and/or experience working and understanding the needs and disparities of the LGBTQ+ community

  • Have a clear understanding regarding why they want to be part of CU’s Immigration Reform 2021 campaign and how they are personally connected to this effort

  • Have prior knowledge and experience working and activating individuals of different ages, immigration statuses, and backgrounds

  • Have prior knowledge and/or experience working with the Latinx community and understand the barriers to access needs, disparities, and intersectionalities within the community

  • Understands the intersectionalities between disparities and community organizing and mobilizing

  • Have the ability to work as part of  a team and the ability to get along with individuals representing multiple backgrounds

  • Have experience working in a cultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, and physical ability is an important institutional value 

  • Possess outstanding organizational skills and have experience maintaining records and files up to date

  • Be self-motivated, driven

  • Be resourceful, can utilize independent judgment, and the ability to balance multiple priorities effectively.

  • Computer proficient and skilled using social media tools

  • Be proficient in verbal and written communication and be able to write, read, and fluently speak in both English and Spanish

  • Be able to work and communicate efficiently with other team members

  • Be flexible with working evening times and on weekends from time to time

 

Main Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

  • Oversee and organize CU’s organizer’s team through the principles of community organizing, transformational organizing, popular education, and world-traveling (Maria Lugones)

  • Lead the development and implementation of CU’s annual Leadership Academy and Mentes Transformativas Cohort Workshops

  • Provide year-round training, mentorship and guidance to CU’s organizers to ensure that organizing strategies are being implemented across all programs and campaigns

  • Centralize the efforts being taken by all members within CU by providing direction, guidance, and updates to the CU team regarding campaign efforts

  • Enforce community organizing practices within projects and among CU members 

  • Utilize community organizing principles to recruit and train campaign volunteers and CU team members on the campaign subject matter

  • Work with state and national partners to advance CU’s immigrant rights, economic opportunity and leadership development strategy

  • Participate in weekly calls with local, state, and national partners.

  • Represent CU within the Enriching Utah Coalition (second Saturday of every month from 12pm to 3pm)

  • Be up to date with what is happening at the national level with relief strategies and connect it to the work that is happening within CU at the local level and relay it their team on an ongoing basis

  • Other duties as needed

 

Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time (40 hrs a week) position. CU’s work hours are Monday through Thursday, from 8 am to 6 pm.

  • Compensation for this position is set at $35,360 a year, this position also includes benefits such as access to subsidized health and dental insurance and a Simple IRA plan as well as paid vacation and sick leave.
