All of Us- Precision Medicine The Future of Health begins with Us

Comunidades Unidas has joined the All of US research program and recently participated in a national convening hosted by UnidosUS. We are excited to be part of the engagement team to involve the Utah Latinx community in this project. We connected with eight other organizations across the country that are actively ensuring our community members are part of this research project. But first, what is All of Us? and what is precision medicine?

All of Us is a research program from the National Institute of Health (NIH). It is a historic effort to collect data over 10 years from at least one million people living in the United States. All of Us will serve as a national research resource to inform thousands of studies, covering a wide variety of health conditions. According to the NIH, researchers will use data collected from the program to learn more about how individual differences in lifestyle, environment, and biological makeup can influence health and disease. This is the first time that communities of color will be part of a research study of this magnitude. Furthermore, this will be the first time in history that NIH will be able to share information with people that are part of the study.

According to the Precision Medicine Initiative, precision medicine is an emerging and holistic approach for treatment and prevention that takes into consideration people’s environment, genes, lifestyle, ethnicity, among other factors.

Comunidades Unidas is one of the few organizations in the country, and the only one in Utah, providing outreach and education about All of Us in Spanish. CU’s Promotoras (Community Health Workers) are reaching out to ensure our Latinx community has sufficient information to join the program if they so choose.
